Participants of Sberbank's business lunch discussed the growing role of
media in Russia
January 27, 2012, Davos (Switzerland) - During the business lunch held by
Sberbank in the World Economic Forum its participants discussed the role of
media in current changes in Russia.
'One very important indicator of changes in society is changes in the
media, - believes the President, Chairman of the Board of Sberbank of
Russia German Gref. - As soon as media change, the authorities will change
inevitably. And this is currently observed in the Russian society: very
strong change of media, emergence of completely new media which could not
be controlled and which are gaining powerful influence over the public
opinion.'
'The changes - appearance of social networks and new network media not
restrained by any censorship (we are not pressed by it either), or format,
- added the editor in chief of newspaper 'Vedomosti' Tatiana Lysova. -
Besides, it appeared that social networks are very efficient means of
self-organization of individuals.'
Editor in chief of the Forbes magazine Elizaveta Osteinskaya appeared to
Russian business to start funding media which may help in restraining
corruption in Russia: 'I may be creating competitors to me by these words,
but I think that Russia should have really independent mass-media.'
First Vice-Premier of the Government of Russia Igor Shuvalov seconded the
proposal of Elizaveta Osetinskaya with reservation that freedom of mass
media should not be like it was in the 'hard ninetieth': 'I like the
newspaper 'Vedomosti'. Sometimes they blow be, sometimes praise, but it is
difficult to suspect that either I or someone else can make a bargain with
them. And the society believes that it is an independent media.'
